Privacy Awareness Week 2019

As part of Privacy Awareness Week 2019, ABLI held a series of workshops to discuss various issues relating to cross-border transfers of personal data.

Privacy Awareness Week is an initiative created by the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) and held annually to promote awareness of privacy and personal data protection issues.

21 May 2019. ABLI-PDPC Workshop on Cross-Border Transfers of Personal Data

On 21 May 2019, the Personal Data Protection Commission (Singapore) and ABLI held a workshop with 50 representatives from the legal profession, industry, regulators and government. Participants from 15 jurisdictions discussed, among others, the following issues:

• General frameworks for data transfer regulations in Asian laws
• Comparable safeguards, ‘whitelists’ and adequacy
• Accountability instruments for data transfers in Asia (APEC CBPRs, contracts, BCRs and certification etc…)
• Data localisation in Asian legal systems
• The ‘Right to Data Portability’ in Asia

21 May 2019. The search for anonymous data: balancing privacy and utility in the modern age

On the evening of 21 May 2019, AXA Singapore² held—in partnership with AsiaDPO,³ LivewithAI⁴ and ABLI—a closed-door discussion on the theme The anonymous data search: Balancing value and privacy in the Big Data age directed to those in the legal, regulatory or technology industries—as well as AI players, start-ups and corporates, who wish to know more about privacy.

The event was opened by Mr YEONG Zee Kin, Deputy Commissioner, Personal Data Protection Commission (Singapore) and featured the following panelists:

22 May 2019. Closed-door workshop with regulators and governments from Asia

On 22 May 2019, ABLI held a closed-door workshop with representatives of regulators and government from Cambodia, Hong Kong SAR, India, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to discuss issues regarding cross-border transfer of personal data in Asia.

22 May 2019. The Future of a Connected Asia-Pacific: Why Personal Data-Transfer Interoperability is Key

On 22 May 2019, BSA | The Software Alliance⁵ held an event featuring a panel on The Future of a Connected Asia-Pacific: Why Personal Data-Transfer Interoperability is Key in collaboration with ABLI and hosted by Microsoft Singapore. The panel focused on the need for interoperable personal data transfer frameworks and mechanisms – particularly from the perspective of the software industry, where services are often offered over the cloud.
